How it's calculated

Every month you and your employer pay into your EPF account, and once a year KWSP credits a dividend on the money that was there. The projection repeats that for every year until the retirement age you enter, raising the salary by the growth rate at each anniversary.

Monthly contributions follow the Third Schedule: the wage is placed in its band, RM 20 wide up to RM 5,000 and RM 100 wide from RM 5,000.01 to RM 20,000, and the employee’s and employer’s shares are the rates applied to the top of the band, each rounded up to the next ringgit. Above RM 20,000 the exact percentages apply. The employer rate is 13% on wages up to RM 5,000 and 12% above; from age 60 the employee pays 0% and the employer 4%.

monthly contribution = employee share + employer share and balance after each month = (balance + contribution) × (1 + dividend ÷ 12)

Worked example (the default inputs). Age 30, retiring at 55, RM 50,000.00 saved so far, a salary of RM 4,000.00 growing 3% a year, and a 5.5% dividend. The employee share is 11% of RM 4,000 = RM 440.00 and the employer share 13% = RM 520.00, RM 960.00 a month in the first year.

After one year the balance is RM 64,689.43: RM 50,000 plus RM 11,520 of contributions plus RM 3,169.43 of dividend. By 55, after 25 years, the contributions total RM 409,860.00 and the dividends RM 552,595.22, for a balance of RM 1,012,455.22. More than half of the final balance is dividend, which is the point of starting early.

KWSP’s own method credits the dividend once a year on daily balances, and the account split between Akaun Persaraan, Akaun Sejahtera and Akaun Fleksibel is not modelled because all three earn the same rate.

What moves the number most

Three inputs dominate: the number of years, the dividend rate and the salary growth. Ten more years of contributions roughly doubles the balance at the default inputs, because the early contributions compound the longest. A dividend of 6% instead of 5.5% adds about a tenth to the final figure over 25 years. Salary growth matters because contributions scale with pay; 3% a year is close to long-run wage growth in Malaysia, and a promotion or job change shows up as a jump in the table below.

Topping up and self-employed contributions

Employees can raise their own share above 11% through i-Topup, deducted by the employer, and anyone can make voluntary contributions through i-Saraan, which carries a government incentive for those without an employer. Enter the higher rate in your contribution field to see the effect; voluntary lump sums are best modelled by adding them to the current balance.

FAQ

What are the EPF contribution rates in Malaysia?

For Malaysian citizens and permanent residents below 60, the employee contributes 11% and the employer 13% when the monthly wage is RM 5,000 or less, or 12% when it is more. From age 60 the employee pays nothing and the employer 4%. Employees may contribute more than 11% through i-Topup; a lower rate is not currently offered. Non-citizens who joined EPF from August 1998 contribute at 2% with a 2% employer share.

How does KWSP round contributions?

Employers must read the contribution from the Third Schedule wage bands rather than apply a percentage, except above RM 20,000 a month where the exact percentage is used and the total is rounded up to the next ringgit. Each band’s figure is the rate applied to the top of the band, rounded up. For a wage of RM 3,250, in the band up to RM 3,260, that gives RM 359 from the employee and RM 424 from the employer rather than RM 358 and RM 423.

How is the EPF dividend calculated?

KWSP declares one rate for the year, each February or March, and applies the same rate to all three accounts. The dividend is computed on the daily balance through the year, with contributions counting from the last day of the month they are received and withdrawals stopping on the day they are made. This calculator approximates that by compounding monthly at the assumed rate; over long periods the difference is small.

What are Akaun Persaraan, Akaun Sejahtera and Akaun Fleksibel?

Since 11 May 2024 new contributions are split 75% into Akaun Persaraan for retirement, 15% into Akaun Sejahtera for housing, education and health withdrawals, and 10% into Akaun Fleksibel, which can be withdrawn at any time. The dividend rate is the same across all three, so the split does not change the projection here; it changes how much you can take out before 55.

When can I withdraw my EPF savings?

Full withdrawal is available from age 55, and savings contributed after 55 can be taken from 60. Partial withdrawals for housing, education, health and the Akaun Fleksibel balance are allowed earlier under KWSP’s rules. Contributions stop being compulsory at 75. Set the retirement age above to the age at which you intend to start drawing down.
