How it's calculated

Amanah Saham Bumiputera pays an income distribution once a year, declared in December and credited as new units on 1 January. ASNB works out each unit holder’s share on the average minimum monthly balance: it takes the lowest balance in each month, adds the twelve months, divides by twelve and multiplies by the rate.

dividend for the year = (sum of each month’s minimum balance ÷ 12) × rate

This calculator follows that method. It treats each month’s minimum as the balance before that month’s deposit, which is what happens when you deposit after the first day of the month. At the end of each year it credits the dividend to the balance, so the next year’s dividend is earned on the dividend too.

Worked example (the default inputs). A starting balance of RM 10,000.00, RM 500.00 added every month and an assumed dividend of 5.75%.

In year one the monthly minimum balances run from RM 10,000 in January to RM 15,500 in December and add up to RM 153,000. Divided by twelve that is RM 12,750, and 5.75% of it is RM 733.13, so the year ends at RM 16,000 of capital plus RM 733.13 of dividend, RM 16,733.13.

After ten years the contributions total RM 70,000.00, the dividends RM 27,712.85, and the balance RM 97,712.85.

The declared rate changes every year and the bonus portion is not guaranteed. The result is an estimate for planning, not a projection by ASNB.

Timing your deposits

Because the dividend counts the minimum balance of each month, a deposit made on the first day of the month earns a full month of dividend while one made on the 30th earns nothing for that month. The same logic applies across the year: a lump sum invested in January earns for twelve months, the same sum in December for none. Salary deduction schemes that deposit at the start of the month capture almost all of the available dividend; manual transfers made whenever money is spare usually lose a month here and there.

The investment limit

ASB accepts cash investments up to 300,000 units. Once your balance reaches that figure, further deposits are refused, although reinvested dividends still push the balance above it. The calculator stops adding your monthly contribution when the cap is reached and shows a note. Unit holders who hit the limit often continue with ASB 2, ASB 3 Didik or the fixed price funds at ASNB, each with its own limit and dividend.

FAQ

How is the ASB dividend calculated?

ASNB takes the lowest balance held in each month of the financial year, adds the twelve figures together, divides by twelve and multiplies by the declared rate. Money deposited on the 15th only counts from the following month, so deposits made early in the month and early in the year earn more. The dividend is paid in units credited on 1 January, and those units earn dividends from then on.

What was the latest ASB dividend?

For the financial year ended 31 December 2025, ASNB declared 5.75 sen a unit: 5.2 sen income distribution plus 0.55 sen bonus, announced on 19 December 2025. The 2024 total was 5.75 sen and 2023 was 5.25 sen. The bonus is not guaranteed, which is why this page asks you to choose the rate to assume rather than fixing it.

What is the maximum I can invest in ASB?

The limit is 300,000 units per account holder for Akaun Dewasa and Akaun Remaja, raised from 200,000 in 2023. Your balance can go above that through reinvested dividends, but new cash deposits are refused once you reach it. The calculator stops counting deposits at the limit and shows a note when that happens.

Is ASB better than a fixed deposit?

They are different products. ASB is a unit trust with a fixed unit price of RM 1 whose return depends on the year’s dividend, is open only to Bumiputera investors, and can be withdrawn at any time. A fixed deposit pays a rate agreed in advance, is protected by PIDM up to RM 250,000 per depositor per bank, and penalises early withdrawal. Enter a fixed deposit rate above to compare the arithmetic on the same deposits; the comparison compounds the deposit monthly, which slightly favours the fixed deposit.

Should I take an ASB financing loan?

ASB financing lets you borrow to buy a large block of units and pay the bank monthly, hoping the dividend exceeds the loan’s effective rate. It works when dividends are higher than the loan rate and the units are held for the full term, and it loses money when they are not. Use the car loan calculator’s converter to turn a quoted flat rate into an effective rate before comparing it with the dividend you expect.
